RAMPANT ROFFEY TOP THE TABLE AGAIN
by Martin Read
Roffey are league leaders again! Just past the halfway point of the season they now sit 14 points clear with a game in hand after beating Eastbourne with overs aplenty to spare. Roffey inserted the seasiders, Leigh Harrison (2-35) dismissing Dan Wells, younger brother of Sussex’s Luke and then claiming the county’s 2nd XI keeper, Callum Jackson. But, on 136-3 the hosts threatened to set a sizeable target, until wickets tumbled, Rohit Jagota working his wiles with 5-42. Although Roffey lost an early wicket in reply, and slipped to 82-5, Kuldeep Rawat with 32 not out and Matt Davies then knocked off the runs in double quick time, Matt’s thunderous unbeaten 75 contained 6 sixes and 3 fours. All rounder Rohit told the District Post: “The wicket was wet and slow – it had been under water the day before, so it was difficult to know what a par score was. We were a bit shaky in the middle of our innings but then Matt batted like a tank again!” Captain Josh Fleming added: “Another great away win for us, we’re going well in the league but have got some tough games coming up.”
Elsewhere, league champions Preston Nomads beat recent leaders East Grinstead – now second placed – to move up to third. After two weeks on the road Roffey return home tomorrow (Saturday) to entertain 4th placed Brighton and Hove having thrashed them earlier in the season.
