Roffey 249-6 declared Cuckfield 228-9
ROFFEY DENIED VICTORY BUT REMAIN SECOND
by Martin Read
Roffey just failed to bowl out Cuckfield, the overs evaporating with numbers ten and eleven at the crease. Batting first on a slow turning wicket Roffey recovered from 67-4 to post a commanding 249-6, declaring with three overs unused. Chris Webb was the mainstay of the innings, his 88 including 14 fours and a six. Kuldeep Rawat made 54 and ever consistent Matt Davies an unbeaten 55 in quick time. Cuckfield’s openers created a solid platform and at 131-1 the target seemed well within reach until Rohit Jagota took 4-57 and Dan Smith 2-50. Abdul Khan claimed another scalp and two run outs whittled away the opposition but despite Roffey’s best efforts Cuckfield’s last two batsmen held out for the draw. Roffey skipper Josh Fleming told the District Post: “It was a difficult wicket to bat on and Chris played really well. Then Kuldeep took on their spinners before Matt came in and did what he’s been doing all season – getting quick runs for us at just the right time. But we bowled too short, enabling them to cruise to a comfortable position. We improved after the drinks break but didn’t really deserve to win.” Roffey remain second, still two points behind East Grinstead with a game in hand and on Saturday (12th) travel to mid table Eastbourne, before on Sunday taking on Hastings in the national round of the ECB Knockout Cup.
